I answer to a smaller version of me at work
My staff badge says Hal. In Harar, my grandchildren call me Halima and the littlest one still presses his forehead to my palm when I tell the old stories. At the clinic, people say Hal, it is quicker, they say it with a smile, and I used to be grateful for the ease. Lately it feels like I am filing pieces of myself into a small box I only open at night. Part of me wants to keep the peace, make the day smooth for everyone else. Part of me wants to hang my full name back on the wall and see who comes to knock. How do you carry your name between house and work, when one feels softer than the other?
