I hide my Harari coffee pot and feel smaller
When I married into a very different family, I thought my cooking and my small ways would be a sweet old thing people smiled at. Now I am grandmother of nine and my Harari coffee pot sits behind the pantry, because someone called it "old fashioned" and put it on a high shelf. At family gatherings they rearrange my corner, change the songs I hummed to the grandchildren, and leave my voice notes on read in the group chat. I keep saying yes because I do not want trouble, but each small thing they ask me to drop chips away at me. How do I keep the little rituals that make me who I am, without making waves or hurting the ones I love?
