My parents think I rejected them every Eid
I grew up in Dakar with my mother folding bright wax prints into piles for Eid, my grandmother whispering du'as into my ear before we left the house. Now when I call on Eid morning my mother leaves the message on read, and when we video call I can see the same loving face looking at me like I am a stranger. They are not Muslim, and they tell relatives I have 'changed' as if I chose to cut them out. Every year the distance breaks my heart a little more. How do I keep showing love without making them feel erased, or making myself small to please them?
