Fajr light in a full Jakarta kitchen
This Ramadan, with the house full of cousins and my mother still arranging plates, I have been noticing the small hush at fajr. I tiptoe into the kitchen where the rice cooker is clicking off, steam fogging the window, and my aunt is bent over a pot, stirring lontong like she has done for years. A text pings from my brother on a bus, a sleepy selfie and a salam. For a few soft minutes, everyone is present but not speaking, and the city sound is dim. I am holding that quiet like a fragile cup. What have your fajr moments been like lately?
