I don't wear anything that shows I'm Muslim
I grew up in Dakar with my grandmother's du'as stitched into my memory, but these days I do not wear anything that visibly marks me as Muslim. On the bus I tuck my scarf into my bag, at family lunches I avoid opening conversations about religion, and at fajr I pray in the kitchen so no one notices me linger. Sometimes I feel relieved, like I am protecting a private corner of myself. Other times I feel small, like I am hiding from my own story. Has anyone else felt this tug between privacy and hiding, and how did you live with it?
