I'm caring for my mother, losing prayer
My days used to have edges. Fajr in the small kitchen where my grandmother taught me to stir tea slow, a bus ride to work with two surahs in my head, a message from my sister read and replied to later. Now I am my mother’s full time carer. Nights are medicine schedules and turning her, afternoons are hospital forms and trying to get her to eat. I find myself skipping dhuhr because I cannot leave her side, and maghrib sometimes happens folded into a nap between feeds. I feel guilty, and also empty when I miss my prayers. How do I choose between being with her every moment and keeping the rituals that keep me feeling like myself and close to Allah? Has anyone else been here, and what did you do?
