I pray in sujood while my partner leaves my messages on read
I am Dawud van der Berg, a revert from Rotterdam. I found certainty in sujood, the quiet place I go when the tram is rattling and the city is still. My spouse and I practice at very different levels. I keep my phone next to me for adhan, she sleeps through Fajr and thinks about religion in the kitchen between coffee and work. It has become a quiet strain: small things pile up, like leaving my Ramadan salad untouched because we disagree about fasting rules, or the children asking why one of us prays alone. How do you live with that everyday mismatch without either of us feeling judged or shrinking away?
