I reverted and my Arabic trips me up
I reverted last year and most days I am grateful beyond words, but when I stand in prayer my lips still freeze. On the bus to work I practice Al Fatiha under my breath, the transliteration on a folded scrap in my purse. At Maghrib in the mosque my tongue lags behind the imam and I get hot with embarrassment, like everyone can tell I did not grow up with this. I want to belong in those quiet rows, but sometimes I avoid praying next to people because of the shame. Has anyone else felt this, and how do you live with that feeling?
