When blessings come I fear they're only dunya
I was making tea after fajr and listening to the rooster outside my courtyard when my daughter sent a picture of the grandchildren sleeping on her lap. A good son called about helping with the roof. I said Alhamdulillah out loud, but a familiar cold thought came in: this is all dunya, given now instead of anything lasting. I do not mean that I do not love these moments. I love them with my whole old chest. Still, the joy often arrives wrapped in a small dread, like I am being promised what will be taken. Has anyone else carried this feeling? How do you live with it?
