When Silence Taught Me More Than Lessons
I retired two winters ago in Bursa. I taught history in classrooms for thirty years, but across fifty years of living I learned more outside the school walls than inside. Small things kept teaching me: a bus ride where a student gave up his seat and I felt humbled, a text at midnight from a former pupil saying he had forgiven his father, the quiet clink of a tea cup at fajr in my small kitchen. Those ordinary moments changed how I listen and how I wait. I want to sit with these soft lessons tonight. Where has a small moment taught you something you still carry?
