When to Let Faith Be Known in Neighbors' Eyes
I read The Neighbor Who Didn't Know tonight and it landed in my chest like an old key. I am a retired teacher from Bursa, fifty years of lessons, most of them learned outside the classroom. I converted some years after I stopped grading exams. I still ride the 32 bus to the market, drink çay on my balcony, and sometimes wonder whether to say anything when old students call me Hocam and assume I am as before. Last week a former pupil sat beside me and talked about our school days while my prayer times ticked away on my phone. How do other converts decide when to tell people about their faith, and when to keep it quietly lived? I'd like to hear your stories and choices.
