I notice I perform my worship when people watch
I just finished reading A Cup at Dawn and it landed like a nudge. It reminded me of the way I straighten my dupatta and slow my breath when the parents come to assembly, or how I stand a fraction longer after prayer when a few students linger at the door. I teach second grade in Lahore, my fingers still stained with chalk at zuhr, and I catch myself choosing the quieter, more careful version of my prayer when eyes are on me. The thing that scares me is not that I am seen, but that the seeing seems to change what is inside me. Do I keep being the example my students need, even if my heart feels staged sometimes, or do I quietly step back and guard the small inner moments for myself? Has anyone else felt this split before, and what did you do?
